M. G. Banerjee Merit Scholarship
Late Madan Gopal Banerjee was born on August 07, 1940 in Bankura district of West Bengal. Having completed his schooling in the village of Beliatore, he moved to Kolkata in the 1950's for higher studies. He did his Bachelor's Degree with Honours in Chemistry before coming to the then Applied Chemistry Department of the University of Calcutta. After his Post Graduation in Chemical Engineering and Chemical Technology from the Department of Applied Chemistry, University of Calcutta in 1963, he specialized in Industrial Engineering and HRD. He also undertook extensive training program on Man-power Planning and Management at the Manchester University, UK, in the early 80's. He was a practicing Industrial Engineer for 15 years and a member of the Indian Institute of Industrial Engineering (IIIE) for over 30 years, and was awarded Fellowship of the Institute in 1996. He was also awarded the coveted Lillian Gilbreth Award in 1999 by IIIE for his outstanding contribution to IE profession. He was a member of the National Council of Indian Institution of Industrial Engineering. M G Banerjee worked in Chemical, Petrochemical and Pharmaceutical Industries for over 40 years. He followed a long and distinguished career in Rohtas Industries Ltd. in Bihar, Hindusthan Antibiotics in Pune, Goa Antibiotics & Pharmaceuticals, and Salgaocar Group of Companies in Goa. He transitioned himself from technical jobs to taking over responsibilities that encompassed the fields of General Management, Human Resources, Labour Relations among others. Throughout his formative years, he never felt shy of taking up challenges and led teams to increased productivity and continued on a journey of knowledge for development with diligence. His profound learning and capacity to adapt, was put to test to the maximum when he came back to Kolkata in the mid-eighties as the Managing Director of the Bengal Chemicals and Pharmaceuticals Ltd. During last years of his career he took up the position of the Chairman and Managing Director of Lubrizol India Limited. This was a paradigm shift for him at the time when India was experiencing profound changes as consequences of economic reforms. As market structures changed and newer situations evolved, he steered this Indo-American joint venture to undisputed market leadership through a disinvestment process. During his tenure, LIL achieved an all-time best performance in production and sales, profit (1998-99), export sales (1994-95), obtained ISO-9002 (1995) and ISO-14001 Certification (1998) and commissioned the second manufacturing unit. Lubrizol India obtained the award for outstanding export performance in 1993-94, Safety Award from Ministry of Petroleum for 1993-94 and 1994-95, award from the IIIE as excellent PSU in 1997-98, 1998-99 & 1999-2000. LIL also received the Golden Peacock Quality Award in Manufacturing Sector (Large) in 1999 from World Quality Council. He was felicitated in 2001 by the Department of Chemical Engineering, University of Calcutta as one of the "Distinguished Alumni" for his outstanding contribution to the industry and academia. He left for the heavenly abode on December 05, 2014. His life and career hold many lessons for all of us. His colleagues, alumni of the department and his family remember him for accomplishing all he did with a sense of utmost sincerity and dignity. The Calcutta University Chemical Engineering Alumni Association feel proud to institute a merit scholarship for students of the Department of Chemical Engineering, University of Calcutta in the memory of Late Madan Gopal Banerjee.
Donor to the Fellowship Fund

The Scholarship was instituted in the year 2015 by his son, Mr. Saugato Banerjee by a donation of Rs.6,00,000/-. In the year 2021, Mr. Banerjee further added Rs.2,50,000/- (approx) in the Fund. Earned interest is utilized every year for offering financial aid to a meritorious but needy Final Year student of the Department.
